R&B Singer Nivea Opens Up About Her Leukemia Diagnosis, Finding Strength and Making a Musical Comeback
Grammy-nominated R&B singer Nivea is sharing one of the most personal chapters of her life, and honey, her story is one of strength, faith, family and resilience!
The songstress, who gave us unforgettable early-2000s hits like “Don’t Mess with My Man” and “Laundromat,” stopped by Tamron Hall for an emotional daytime exclusive, revealing that she was diagnosed with chronic myeloid leukemia, also known as CML.
Now, the mother of four is opening up about the frightening experience that changed her life, the medical treatment that helped bring her into remission and why she refuses to let her diagnosis keep her from doing what she loves most: making music!
A Mysterious Pain That Changed Everything
Nivea explained that her health journey began shortly after a Valentine’s Day performance when she woke up experiencing an intense, unexplained pain in her side.
At first, she thought it might be something relatively minor, like constipation or a pulled muscle. She even scheduled a massage, hoping it would relieve what felt like a painful knot.
Unfortunately, the pain only became worse.
After struggling to get off the massage table, Nivea reached out to her 21-year-old daughter, Navy, who encouraged her mother to seek medical attention immediately.
Thank goodness she listened!
The two headed to Piedmont Hospital’s emergency room in Atlanta, where doctors discovered that Nivea’s spleen was enlarged.
That finding raised concerns about a possible blood cancer, prompting doctors to arrange an urgent transfer to Emory for specialized testing.
Imagine going from performing onstage to suddenly hearing doctors mention the word leukemia. I can’t even begin to imagine how overwhelming that must have felt.
Nivea Recalls Her Emotional Leukemia Diagnosis
At just 44 years old, Nivea found herself facing medical terminology, procedures and possibilities she had never encountered before.
During her conversation with Tamron, she recalled undergoing two bone marrow biopsies to determine exactly what type of leukemia she had.
The first procedure was especially painful and unsuccessful in obtaining the necessary sample. Doctors later performed a second biopsy with imaging guidance, allowing them to collect the bone marrow needed for testing.
Ultimately, Nivea received a diagnosis of chronic myeloid leukemia, a type of cancer affecting the blood and bone marrow.
What surprised Tamron was Nivea’s reaction to the news.
Rather than completely falling apart, the singer explained that she felt an unexpected sense of acceptance and even relief once she understood what she was facing.
Having already overcome so many challenges throughout her life, Nivea approached this diagnosis as another obstacle she was determined to get through.
She also spoke candidly about initially knowing very little about leukemia and having to learn about the disease alongside her family.
Her Children Became Her Biggest Support System
One of the most touching parts of the interview was hearing Nivea discuss her four children.
When Tamron asked how she shared the diagnosis with them, Nivea explained that her children were present for many of the conversations with her medical team.
Naturally, there were moments of uncertainty and concern, but the family leaned on one another for strength.
Nivea admitted that she experienced some sadness when she began thinking about everything she still wanted to accomplish in life.
And that part really touched me.
As women, mothers and grandmothers, we spend so much time taking care of everyone else that sometimes we forget how important it is to pay attention to our own bodies.
Hearing Nivea speak so openly about her experience was a reminder that our health deserves just as much attention as everything else on our busy schedules.
Understanding CML and the Treatment That Brought Hope
Nivea was joined by Dr. Colin Vale to help viewers better understand chronic myeloid leukemia and the advancements in treatment that have changed the outlook for many patients.
Unlike some other forms of leukemia, CML can often be managed with targeted medications that interfere with the abnormal signals responsible for the growth of leukemia cells.
These treatments, known as tyrosine kinase inhibitors, have transformed CML care for many patients, although treatment plans and responses vary from person to person.
Nivea discussed how targeted treatment helped bring her disease into remission, offering hope as she continues navigating life after her diagnosis.
The conversation also highlighted the importance of medical research, clinical trials and ongoing advancements in cancer treatment.
And while Nivea’s experience is encouraging, her story is also an important reminder that persistent or unexplained symptoms should never be ignored.
Nivea Is Ready for Her Next Musical Chapter!
Now, here’s the part that made me smile!
Despite everything she’s experienced, Nivea isn’t allowing her diagnosis to define her future.
The R&B favorite is returning to music and even treated the Tam Fam to a special preview of her new song, “Ferris Wheel.”
I love seeing artists from the early 2000s returning to the spotlight, especially when they have such meaningful stories to share.
Nivea has always had such a distinctive voice and personality, and it’s wonderful to see her embracing this next chapter with renewed purpose.
Her appearance was about so much more than a medical diagnosis. It was about finding hope during uncertainty, leaning on loved ones and continuing to pursue your dreams even when life takes an unexpected turn.
My Thoughts on Nivea’s Emotional Interview
I’ve enjoyed Nivea’s music for years, and watching her share something so deeply personal gave me an entirely new appreciation for her strength.
What stood out most was how quickly her life changed. One minute, she was doing what she loved onstage, and shortly afterward, she was in a hospital learning about a condition she knew very little about.
Sometimes we dismiss those little aches and pains because we’re busy, tired or convinced they’ll eventually disappear.
But our bodies have a way of letting us know when something needs attention.
I also loved seeing Tamron create a space where Nivea could share her experience honestly while helping other women become more informed about their health.
I’m wishing Nivea continued strength, good health and so much success as she returns to the recording studio.
And I can’t wait to hear more of “Ferris Wheel!”
Have you been following Nivea’s journey? And do you remember singing along to “Don’t Mess with My Man” back in the day? Because that song was definitely a whole moment!
