Celebrity Style: Aniya Harpers Silver Sequins Dress At MTV’s VMAs

Aniya Harvey may have left the Love Island USA villa, but she certainly hasn’t left the fashion conversation!

The Atlanta beauty was an original Islander on Season 8 of Love Island USA, entering the villa on Day 1 and ultimately finishing as the runner-up alongside Carl Schmidt on Day 32. After her Fiji villa experience, Aniya has stepped right back into the spotlight and she recently brought some serious sparkle to the MTV VMAs in Los Angeles.

While walking the blue carpet on Sunday, September 27, Aniya opened up about life after Love Island, describing the experience as “super surreal.” She also shared that she’s stayed close with the girls from the show, which I absolutely love! Making lifelong friendships may be one of the sweetest souvenirs from the villa.

But what made Aniya’s VMAs fashion moment even more special for me is that I happen to know the Atlanta designer behind her custom look!

When I saw Aniya step onto that blue carpet in a jaw-dropping silver sequin dress, I immediately recognized the work of my dear friend Maria (Maria Harper Designs). And honey, that dress was sparkling! 

Aniya’s sultry custom creation quickly became a major fashion moment, and I was thrilled to see Maria’s work shining all the way in Hollywood. She has created several looks for me over the years and has been designing for decades, with an impressive career in entertainment fashion. Maria also spent years at Tyler Perry Studios as a lead costume designer and has created looks for countless personalities throughout the entertainment industry.

I caught up with Maria to find out a little more about the inspiration behind Aniya’s VMAs look, and she told me it was truly a collaborative effort. The 24-year-old Aniya brought Maria an inspirational photo, and from there, Maria took the concept and transformed it into her own custom creation.

And get this it took three days to bring the entire look to life!

Maria has actually been sewing for Aniya and her family since Aniya was just 4 years old, so there’s something incredibly special about seeing that relationship come full circle on such a major Hollywood carpet.

After years of creating for the family, Maria was understandably excited to see Aniya step out in the finished look and shine literally! on one of music’s biggest nights.

And can we talk about the finished styling?!

From Aniya’s sleek updo and sparkling jewels to that show-stopping silver dress and strappy sandals, everything came together beautifully. The look was sexy, glamorous and completely camera-ready.

That’s a 10/10 from me!

I love seeing Atlanta talent make its way onto major Hollywood carpets, and even more, I love seeing talented designers like Maria get their flowers for the artistry, craftsmanship and countless hours that happen behind the scenes.

Aniya absolutely sparkled, but knowing the Atlanta connection behind that gorgeous dress made this fashion moment even sweeter for me!
