Madonna Makes a Show-Stopping Return to the VMAs!

After a 23-year absence, Madonna, 68, made her highly anticipated return to the MTV Video Music Awards, and naturally, she didn’t just arrive she opened the show! And she brought a few fabulous friends along for the ride. Stepping onto the stage, Madonna made her presence known with the unforgettable declaration: “It’s mother.” And honestly… who else could say it quite like that?
The pop icon was joined by Sabrina Carpenter, reuniting for their dance track “Bring Your Love,” which the pair first performed together during Carpenter’s headlining set at Coachella in April.

Madonna also teamed up with Charli XCX for their collaboration “Danceteria Afterhours,” turning the performance into a full-on pop culture moment. The star-studded number included surprise cameos from Julia Fox, Julia Garner, Debi Mazar, Seth Rogen, Andrew Watt, Tony Ward and Fab 5 Freddy, making the already memorable performance even more spectacular.

And Madonna wasn’t just there to perform she was also one of the night’s biggest nominees. The superstar led the pack with 13 nominations for her album Confessions II, ultimately taking home three awards, including the coveted Artist of the Year honor.

While accepting the award, Madonna took a moment to reflect on just how far she has come. She looked back at her appearance at the very first VMAs 43 years ago, recalling how a wardrobe malfunction during her performance once had her manager telling her that her career was over.
Fast-forward more than four decades, and Madonna stood on that same stage as one of music’s most enduring icons.

During her acceptance speech, she opened up about spending the past year and a half rediscovering herself, trusting her instincts and creating the music she truly wanted to make.
For Madonna, that journey is what being an artist is all about and she encouraged everyone watching to do the same: spend the next year, the next decade or even the rest of their lives finding themselves and believing in themselves. Now that is how you make a comeback.
