Zendaya’s The Drama: Not the Wedding Movie I Expected

I walked into the theater to see The Drama in the happiest mood. As a bride-to-be, I thought watching Zendaya Coleman in a wedding-themed film would be a sweet, feel-good love story. Instead… it turned out to be something completely different and honestly caught me off guard.

Zendaya stars as Emma Harwood, a quirky bookstore clerk, alongside Robert Pattinson as Charlie Thompson, a British museum director. The two first meet at a coffee shop when Charlie tries to strike up a conversation, but Emma can’t hear him she’s deaf in one ear and has earbuds in. Eventually they connect and begin dating.

One thing I immediately loved about the film was how it was shot. The storytelling style felt very unique, almost like flipping through chapters in a book. The scenes unfold in a way that feels like you’re watching pages come to life, moving quickly through moments in their relationship. Before long, months pass and the two become engaged.

Both characters are a bit socially awkward, but things take a darker turn during a double date with friends when everyone begins revealing their deepest secrets. Emma’s confession is the most shocking she admits that in high school she once had thoughts about becoming a mass shooter before someone else “stole her idea.” The revelation deeply unsettles their friends and sends Charlie into a spiral. He begins to question everything, becoming increasingly paranoid and fearful of Emma and her behavior.

From there, the story quickly unravels. Although the couple eventually marries, the wedding reception becomes a disaster and I won’t spoil exactly how if you plan to watch it.

Going in, I expected romance, joyful moments, wedding gowns, and happy endings. Instead, the film leans more into psychological thriller territory, which wasn’t quite what I signed up for that night. The movie is well written and the acting is strong, but the dark tone left me feeling a little disappointed.

I usually enjoy Zendaya’s films, and she’s fantastic here, but this one felt especially heavy. As someone currently planning a wedding, I left the theater feeling a bit reflective thinking about forgiveness, true love, happiness, and the future.

It even made me wonder: is it worth moving forward with someone if their past leaves you living in fear of what they might become… or do you choose hope and believe love will win?

I’m still not sure of the answer. The Drama hits theaters on April 3.
